For the sixth straight year, CITGO Petroleum Corporation and Citizens Energy of Boston are partnering in a heating oil program for low-income households.
Since 2005, 170 million gallons of home heating oil have been donated to needy families across the United States to help them stay warm through the winter months, according to a CITGO press release. The program was kicked off January 27 with a delivery to a low-income family in South Boston.
Those needing heating oil assistance can call Citizens at 1-877-JOE-4-OIL (1-877-563- 4645) to see if they are eligible. If approved, the household will receive an authorization letter from Citizens Energy Corporation and details on how to arrange delivery with an approved heating oil dealer.
According to Citizens’ website, the program was available in 17 states last year, mostly in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic, but also including Alaska, Wisconsin, Michigan and Indiana. The website says the program has also served 250 tribal communities and 245 homeless shelters.
Note: As of the week of Feb. 28, according to the Citizens Energy website, the program is no longer accepting applications for 2011.
