February 22, 2019 – The Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is adding $3 million to the low-income Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP). The funds will help low-income households pay for heating costs this winter.
"In many cases, this assistance is the difference between heating and eating or other vital necessities," said Dan Brennan, Maine Housing Director. “This program provides critical, short term financial assistance to the most vulnerable in our communities.”
In Maine, an individual may qualify for assistance if they make less than $18,210 annually. A household of four are eligible if they make $37,650 or less annually. Nearly 28,000 Maine households receive assistance benefits each heating season. The average benefit amount in Maine is $918.
