January 12, 2017 – Heating assistance is available for low-income Montanans through the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP), and Energy Share, but many are not receiving the help they need.
“People do not have to choose between food or medicine and keeping warm during Montana’s long winter months. LIHEAP is here to help ease those heating costs,” said Cassie O’Leary, Supportive Services Manager at Action, Inc.
Montana’s LIEAP is administered through the Montana Department of Health and Human Services; Action Inc. coordinates the program for Butte-Silver Bow, Powell, Madison, Granite, and Anaconda-deer Lodge counties.
To qualify for LIHEAP assistance, a household must meet the state's designated eligibility requirements. Eligibility includes verification of a household’s gross income within six months prior to receiving assistance. Some households may qualify for categorical eligibility—meaning the household automatically qualifies—if members of the household are receiving SNAP, TANF, or SSI. Montanans can apply for LIHEAP assistance through April 30, 2018.
