September 29, 2017 – A new program in Memphis, Tennessee will provide weatherization services to ninety families in Memphis and Shelby County. The program is a $1.5 million grant program. The city of Memphis announced the new program last week.
Tennessee’s new assistance program is a partnership with the Tennessee Housing Development Agency, The Division of Housing and Community Development, and the United States Department of Energy.
Chad Bowman, the Tennessee Weather Assistance Program Manager, said, “Some of the things that are included in weatherizing a home could be duct insulation as well as attic insulation, possibly windows, HVAC units are looked at as a health and safety measure.”
Housing and Community Development Director Paul Young said the grants will help residents reduce their energy burdens.
City Council member Patrice Robinson said counties in Memphis, Tennessee have some of the highest energy burdens in the nation at 13.1%, and that a household’s energy burden should only be around 4%.
