September 26, 2014—The latest edition of the LIHEAP Clearinghouse's newsletter is now available online. The lead article discusses the recent round of grants provided by the Michigan Energy Assistance Program. The Michigan Public Service Commission the Michigan Department of Human Services awarded almost $90 million to 13 entities across the state. The funding helps provide bill-payment assistance to low-income households, in addition to supporting programs that move those households toward self-sufficiency in their energy needs.
The newsletter also examines low-income energy assistance programs in Colorado. Mandated by rules passed by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission in 2011, the programs are entering their third year of operation. During their most recently-completed year, the assistance programs helped almost 18,000 households and provided over $116,000 in arrearage forgiveness and more than $7 million in bill-payment assistance.
