September 15, 2017 – Many states around the country are beginning to accept LIHEAP applications for the elderly and disabled starting October 1. General applications in many states are being accepted starting November 1, and in some states starting December 1. In Iowa, Iowans 60 years and older, as well as the disabled, can begin applying for the 2017-2018 Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) starting Monday, October 2. Applications for the general public will be accepted beginning November 1.
Missouri LIHEAP applicants who are elderly or disabled may begin applying on November 1 and general applications will begin being accepted December 1. The state of Missouri will begin mailing assistance applications November 1.
Wisconsin residents may begin applying for the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP) starting October 1.
Requirements for applying may be different from state to state, but in general, requirements include a copy of Social Security cards for all members of the household, a copy of their recent heating bill as well as a recent electric bill. All household members also need proof of gross income for the past three months, the past calendar year, or their most recent federal income tax return.
LIHEAP is not designed to pay a household’s total energy costs but provide supplemental assistance based on several factors such as total household income, household size, dwelling type, and type of heating fuel, among others.
