February 9, 2018 – New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office announced on February 7 that additional funding is available for New Yorkers through the Home Energy Assistance Project (HEAP) to heat their homes. Households that are in danger of a shut off or are in danger of running out of fuel will be able to apply for a second emergency benefit through HEAP starting Monday, Feb. 12.
Governor Cuomo says requests for emergency heating assistance have increased by forty percent compared to last year due to the persistently cold temperatures.
“The availability of this funding will help keep our most vulnerable New Yorkers warm and safe this winter,” said Cuomo in a news release. "New York is suffering a one-two-punch this season with cold temperatures and rising energy prices, and I am encouraging all eligible New Yorkers to apply for assistance."
HEAP benefits are determined based on household income, size, and type of heating used. Cuomo says that a household using oil as their heating source, qualifies for regular HEAP benefits and qualifies for two emergency benefits could receive more than $2,000 in assistance this winter.
