November 2, 2018 – Minnesota’s Energy Assistance Program is receiving more than $116 Million in funding to help low-income Minnesotans pay for their energy bills this winter. In Minnesota, LIHEAP benefit payments are made directly to the utility companies and heating vendors.
Minnesota’s Commerce Department Commissioner Jessica Looman—whose agency administers LIHEAP in partnership with 29 local service providers throughout the state—said, “The Energy Assistance Program is an essential safety net for Minnesotans who struggle to pay their energy bills and stay warm throughout the winter.”
More than 126,000 households in Minnesota were served by LIHEAP in 2017. The average grant amount was $545. Eligible households also received assistance in addressing no-heat crisis situations as well as repairing broken heating systems.
