January 25, 2019 – Operation Fuel in Hartford, Connecticut will be hosting its annual “Ice House” event on Thursday, January 31 at The Old State House. The Ice House is a house structure sculpted from ice, and participants can walk through the house. The event is intended to raise awareness of living in a home without heat during the cold, winter months.
““We are going to be sitting within ice walls and we are going to feel what it is like not to have the heat and lights on,” said Brenda Watson, Operation fuels Executive Director. Watson says it’s important for everyone to know what it’s like, “trying to survive in dark, frigid homes.”
According to Operation Fuel, an estimated 500,000 Connecticut households can’t afford the cost of their utility bills. Many of those households are families with young children, elderly and those with disabilities.
The idea for the Ice House was the result of membership in the National Energy and Utility Affordability Coalition (NEUAC). Other organizations, including New Jersey Shares, Pennsylvania’s Dollar Energy Fund and the Fuel Fund of Maryland also host an Ice House event each year.
In addition to the Ice House, there will be music, food trucks, visits from mascots and additional information on energy assistance programs.
